When you think about designing a newly remodeled bathroom, one of the last things you are thinking about is shower curtains, particularly if you are working on a master bath, as most homeowners opt for frameless glass doors – no shower curtain required. However, if you are remodeling a guest bath or second bath in your home, it is possible that this should be the first thing you think about. Gone are the days where shower curtains are just plain. You have the opportunity to make your shower curtain part of your bathroom’s overall décor or even the element that really stands out. Here are a few tips for getting the WOW factor out of your shower
curtain.

Are You Using Wallpaper?

The first question you want to ask yourself when you sit down to think about the shower curtain, is whether or not the bathroom is going to have wallpaper. If that is the case, you want to choose the wallpaper first, and then think about the design for the shower curtain, as matching in the reverse can be very difficult. Once you have chosen your wallpaper, you want to select a shower curtain that will match. You have two options – coordinate almost exactly with the wallpaper or add a different color that will ‘pop’ when you step into the room.

Are You Painting the Walls?

If you are choosing to simply paint the walls, you want to choose your shower curtain first, and then the paint color. If you happen to find a must-have patterened shower curtain, you can easily have paint mixed to match one of the colors in the shower curtain. For instance, if you choose birdhouses, there might be a robin’s egg blue running throughout the shower curtain, in a small amount. Choosing robin’s egg blue for the walls could be what really helps the shower curtain stand out. Remember, however, that you will need to choose granite countertop for your vanity, so be sure there are some options available to match the other colors – such as a neutral tone – to bring the entire bathroom together.

Choosing a Fabric

Once you have the decision between paint and wallpaper figured out and are ready to decide on the shower curtain, you have a few options. The simplest way to find the perfect shower curtain is to have it custom made. If you can sew or stamp, then your cost will be minimal. Choosing to have a shower curtain custom made could provide you with the perfect option. For instance, if you are designing a Victorian bathroom, you can add ruffles to give it that girly feeling you desire in the space. If having custom made shower curtains is not in your budget, check out your local stores or even online to find the perfect pattern. You will be pleasantly surprised at the choices that are available.

As for the type of fabric you choose, the possibilities are endless, especially if you are opting for custom made shower curtains. The materials – silk, satin, cotton – is really up to you. It will depend on what you want your curtain to look like hanging off the shower curtain rod. Be careful in choosing the fabric, however, as you want something that is easy to clean. There are some materials, such as a blend of cotton and linen often requires dry cleaning. You want to have the type of fabric that works best for you, as bathroom shower curtains often fall victim to moisture – obviously – and dirty hands, hairspray, and other beauty products that are used in the bathroom.

The length of the curtain you choose will also depend on your preference. You can choose to install the curtain rod higher, giving you the opportunity to install longer curtains. You can do the exact opposite, as well, lowering the shower curtain rod to have a shorter curtain. One trend that designers are seeing is longer curtains, even flowing and resting onto the bathroom floor. This option may not be good for showers that are used often, as the curtain will become damp. However, if it is a guest bath that is not used often, this could be a perfect decision to create a certain aesthetically pleasing appearance.

There are many ways you can use a shower curtain to provide a wow factor in your bathroom. You can choose from plain or patterned, long or short, depending on your preference. You also have a wide variety of materials to choose from, including ones that are machine washable to make life easier for you. Take the time to consider what type, style, and length of shower curtain will work best to meet your needs and the overall design you have chosen for your bathroom. You will be surprised at the results of the finished renovation if you start with just a shower curtain.
