When Dr. Teresa Tigart and her partner Sue Kylman bought their Woodbridge, Virginia home in 2021, they knew they were getting a project. The house had good bones — but it had been untouched since it was built in 1980. Pink carpeting. Pink drapes. Walls of pink. Beams in the ceiling. An orange sink. Red and white tiles. A small, dark kitchen that reminded visitors of a pizzeria. An outdated half-bath. Four decades of design choices that needed to go. What they needed was a contractor with the vision and skill to take a 40-year-old home and bring it all the way into the present — without losing the character that made the house worth saving. They found that in Bull Run Kitchen & Bath.

This Woodbridge whole-home renovation was one of Bull Run Kitchen & Bath's most comprehensive projects in Northern Virginia. Lead designer Troy Caswell worked with Teresa and Sue on a scope of work that touched virtually every inch of the house:

- Two kitchens completely renovated — cabinetry, countertops, layout, and appliances

- Three bathrooms redesigned, each with a distinct theme chosen by the homeowners

- Laundry room expanded by removing an existing half-bath from the space

- Half-bath relocated to the hallway as a powder room

- Master bathroom converted from an underperforming space into a large, luxurious shower suite

- Old brick in the kitchen addressed — covered, painted, and replaced with cabinetry where possible

- Structural arch passthrough created between rooms to improve flow and light

- Staircase reconfigured from an L-shape to a straight run for easier access as the homeowners age

- A bedroom converted into an office

- Two downstairs rooms reconfigured into an office and a large craft storage room

- Flooring replaced throughout

The scope was immense. "We touched every inch of this house," Troy said.

Design & Materials:

What set this Woodbridge renovation apart was the deeply personal approach to each space. Teresa and Sue didn't just want a renovated home — they wanted rooms that told stories and brought back memories. The powder room featured a custom hand-made countertop sourced from an artisan in Vietnam — a three-dimensional piece with koi fish and a flowing river motif, mounted on a three-drawer chest converted into a vanity. "Everyone comments on it," Sue said. "It's a show star."

The master bathroom was designed around a beach and ocean theme. Mosaic tile on the walls evoked sand. The shower floor used tiles that resembled broken seashells. Waterfall tile designs flanked the shower on either side. A glass tile panel in the mirror featured a photographic image of the ocean. "The bathroom — we really love the sea, the ocean, and so I wanted the shower to have a beachy feel," Teresa explained. "Master, cottagey, beachy."

The downstairs bathroom was given a Southwestern style renovation, while the powder room carried an Asian-inspired aesthetic with bamboo floors and a custom vanity top. In the kitchen, the red brick was painted and in many areas replaced entirely by cabinetry that expanded storage and updated the look. Beams were removed from the ceiling. A solid wall was opened up to improve flow and light. Troy suggested an architectural arch passthrough — "that makes a big difference," Sue said — that now serves as one of the home's most distinctive design elements. The overall color direction was calm and gray: "I wanted it calm and peaceful — it's very grey," Sue described.

The Transformation Process:

A project of this scale came with challenges — and Bull Run Kitchen & Bath met every one of them. "With any big project like this, there are definitely challenges that come up," Troy acknowledged. "When you take a wall down, open a wall up, move walls — there are challenges. We don't always know what's in there even though we do the inspections ahead of time. But together we overcame them."

The crew worked with a sensitivity that the homeowners deeply appreciated. Work was organized so the team could come and go without disturbing the household unnecessarily. When decisions needed to be made on the fly, the crew checked in with Teresa and Sue before proceeding — "pretty good at asking us, 'Do you want it this way, do you want it here or there?'" Sue noted. The Bull Run sign stayed in the yard for 18 months. Every neighbor on the street came by at some point. Teresa and Sue were happy to tell them who did the work. What Our Clients Said

Teresa and Sue were openly emotional about the experience:

"What a wonderful experience this has been over the last several months as we put all of these things together."

"We brought it into 2023 — perfect. And now into 2024, and we're so happy with what we have."

Troy Caswell, Bull Run's lead designer, added: "My favorite part of this project was working with the ladies — they are absolutely amazing. In fact, they have become dear friends of ours, and my wife and I plan on spending some time with them as we go through the years."

"In conclusion, everybody got exactly what they wanted. We love this project."
