After 17 years in the same home, Greg and Tina Irvin of Fredericksburg, Virginia knew their kitchen was long overdue for a change. The space had grown dark, gloomy, and difficult to navigate — a brown, cramped layout that no longer matched how the family wanted to live. When they were ready to move forward, they chose Bull Run Kitchen & Bath — and that decision fundamentally changed how the Irvins experience their home. What followed was a relationship that extended well beyond a single project and fundamentally changed how the Irvins experience their home.

The Fredericksburg kitchen remodeling project was the first of three distinct projects Greg and Tina undertook with Bull Run Kitchen & Bath. The main kitchen renovation was followed by a brand-new kitchen installation in the basement, and later — after 19 years of living with an unchanged master bedroom — a comprehensive master bedroom and bathroom remodel. The kitchen renovation addressed everything the Irvins had struggled with for years. The old space was dark and gloomy with brown cabinetry, and movement around the kitchen was physically challenging. They wanted more light, better flow, and an island that would serve as the functional center of the new layout. Working with Matt, their design consultant at Bull Run Kitchen & Bath, they shaped a plan that was ambitious but grounded — Matt even talked Greg down from changes that would have been excessive, focusing the scope on what would genuinely improve the space rather than over-engineering it.

Design & Materials:

The finished Fredericksburg kitchen remodeling project delivered precisely what the Irvins envisioned: a transformed space centered on a well-positioned island, brighter finishes throughout, and a layout that finally made sense for daily life. The contrast with the dark, brown kitchen that had existed for nearly two decades was total. Greg brought his own sketches and ideas to the design process — a detail that speaks to how deeply invested the family was in the outcome. Matt worked with those drawings, refined them for better flow, and incorporated his professional expertise to strengthen the design without abandoning what the homeowners wanted. The basement kitchen was an equally impactful addition. The family entertains regularly, and having a full kitchen adjacent to the pool area in the basement eliminated the constant trips upstairs that had previously been necessary when hosting gatherings. Now Greg can cook downstairs and remain fully present with guests — a quality-of-life upgrade that the family enjoys every time they entertain. The master bedroom and bathroom remodel, undertaken after the kitchen projects were complete, brought the same quality and care to a space that had not been touched in 19 years. The result included a dramatically improved layout with better flow, two new closets — including a large walk-in closet for Tina — and a new shower that was significantly larger and more functional than what it replaced. A new tub also became one of Greg's favorite features in the entire project.

The Transformation Process:

The kitchen remodeling project coincided with a particularly meaningful moment in the Irvins' life: their 25th wedding anniversary. The couple traveled to Italy for a week or two during the renovation, and when they returned, the transformation was complete. Greg called it "a tremendous transformation" — a word he initially misspoke as "transition" before catching himself, which in its own way captures just how profound the change felt. Throughout all three projects, communication with Matt was a consistent strength. Greg emphasized that responsiveness was a key part of what made working with Bull Run Kitchen & Bath feel like a true partnership. Texts and calls were returned quickly, not days later — a level of attention that made the family feel valued and informed throughout each project.
