The Chantilly home, built in 2012 in the Laken Kante neighborhood, featured a traditional kitchen layout with dark, dated colors that no longer reflected the family's taste. The goal was a complete transformation: lighter, more modern, open-concept, and designed to make better use of the adjacent sunroom. The project would ultimately touch nearly every element of the kitchen — cabinetry, countertops, flooring, lighting, pantry design, and the exterior wall itself. Heather came to Charlie with a specific list: new exterior door, a hidden walk-in pantry, and a fresh color concept. Charlie took those starting points and ran with them, designing the kitchen from top to bottom and finding improvements the family had not even thought to ask for.
Design & Materials:
The kitchen transformation begins with the cabinetry — a sophisticated three-color system that creates visual warmth and depth throughout the space. Base cabinets are finished in cappuccino by Yorktown, a warm tone that sets a welcoming feeling and pairs beautifully with the cumin-colored engineered hardwood flooring running underfoot. Upper cabinets shift to a white shaker style by Waypoint, creating a bright, airy counterpoint to the warmer lower tones. Pantry cabinetry uses a black distressed-painted door style — also in shaker profile — to provide contrast and visual interest. Two different quartz countertop colors tie the transitions between white, black, and cappuccino together while also providing a deliberate contrast near the hood area to complement the backsplash. The backsplash itself uses 4x12 subway tile in light gray, installed in a herringbone pattern for added visual texture. Under-cabinet lighting, six-inch recessed can lights, and additional cabinet lighting ensure the kitchen stays bright and functional at any hour. The showstopper, however, is the 10-foot multi-slide door that connects the kitchen to the sunroom — wall to wall, eliminating barriers and flooding the space with natural light. The island grew to accommodate the reconfigured floor plan: it now features double-sided storage on both faces and a U-shaped seating area that comfortably seats six. The hidden walk-in pantry completes the layout with seamless design that keeps lines clean and clutter out of sight.
The Transformation Process:
About 80 percent of this Chantilly kitchen remodel was custom work — from the cabinetry to the door installation to the pantry design — which made the timeline the project's most significant challenge.
