When a Centreville, Virginia family decided to transform their traditionally styled home into a transitional-contemporary showpiece, they trusted Bull Run Kitchen & Bath with one of the most ambitious renovation projects in Northern Virginia. The result is a full whole-home transformation — anchored by a dramatic white waterfall island kitchen — that blends modern luxury, smart technology, and timeless craftsmanship at every turn.

The home entered the renovation as a fully traditional property. The client's vision was to move it into transitional contemporary territory while preserving some traditional textures and warmth. The scope of work extended well beyond the kitchen: it included a custom fireplace surround in the living room, a redesigned outdoor patio with a custom pergola system, a spa-quality master bathroom suite, children's bathrooms designed around each child's personality, and the addition of a complete laundry room on the upper level — a structural change that required pushing a wall two feet. The kitchen, however, is the centerpiece — and every decision in this space was made at the highest level.
Design & Materials:
The kitchen's foundation is a Decton porcelain slab waterfall island — a breathtaking focal point that runs continuously from the surface down both sides to the floor, with a richly textured surface that commands attention the moment you enter the room. The island is large and long, designed for serious entertaining. A secondary sink is installed within the island, complementing the main sink along the perimeter for maximum functional flexibility. Cabinetry throughout is Yorktown's high-end inset line — base and wall cabinets with seamless, frameless doors that give the kitchen its clean, luxury feel. A Cambria quartz countertop with minimal surface movement runs along the back wall and wraps around the perimeter, also serving as the backsplash — continuously fabricated with precisely pattern-matched seams around the window and behind the 48-inch professional stove. Outlets and switches are hidden beneath the upper cabinets to preserve the clean visual surface throughout. A custom-made hood above the stove anchors the back wall, complemented by wood-tone accents that tie into the cafe nook area on the opposite end of the kitchen. The cafe nook uses decorative glass upper cabinet doors and the same wood-tone surface as the hood, creating a visual bookend that connects both ends of the kitchen beautifully. The kitchen's most remarkable hidden feature: an induction cooktop concealed beneath the Decton island surface, virtually invisible when not in use and fully functional with the appropriate cookware. A double oven provides additional capacity for the family's frequent large gatherings. Brass-toned faucets and cabinet handles run as accent hardware throughout the entire main floor. Enlarged windows along the sink wall bring in more natural light and provide a framed view of the backyard — an important detail for this client, who previously lived near the coast and wanted to maintain that indoor-outdoor connection.
The Transformation Process:
The renovation addressed every level of the home, including a master bathroom designed for two individuals with separate vanity sections, individual smart toilets, a custom jetted tub, and a steam shower with smart controls. The children's bathrooms were individually designed to match each child's personality — one in pink with hexagon tile, one in dark gray with book-match shower tile. A new laundry room on the upper level required a structural wall relocation. Outdoors, Bull Run designed and installed a custom pergola system with motorized louvers, integrated lighting, and a full all-season enclosure — giving the family an outdoor space they can use year-round.

Testimonial:
“I love the overall design of this kitchen. Our client is so happy. But I have one favorite part — the hidden induction cooktop placed underneath the Decton porcelain slab. Within a couple of minutes, you see boiling water. The client wanted another efficient cooking surface, and we placed it right in the island.”
