When Marty found a 1995 Alexandria, Virginia home with great structure but a serious need for updating, Jim was overseas and skeptical. After seeing the pre-renovation condition in person, he admitted that had he been home, they likely wouldn't have bought it. But Marty had already met with designer Charlie from Bull Run Kitchen & Bath, and the team had already mapped out a 3D rendering of what the home could become. That rendering changed everything. What followed was a five-to-six month whole-home renovation that produced a forever home the couple couldn't be happier with — finished just in time for their wedding.

The Alexandria home was a classic 1995 construction with a wall for every room and a kitchen tucked away on the far side of the house. Marty's vision was bold: remove as many walls as possible, create an open floor plan with natural light flowing through, and relocate the kitchen to become the warm, central gathering space she had always envisioned — a place where family could cook together, just as she had growing up. Marty found Bull Run Kitchen & Bath. The decision came down to Charlie's transparency, his collaborative approach, and the 3D engineering renderings that allowed the couple to see the transformation in real time before a single wall came down.
Design & Materials:
The scope of the Alexandria whole-home remodel was comprehensive, touching nearly every surface and room in the house. Kitchen: Moved from one side of the house to the other — a structural undertaking that required shifting a load-bearing wall two feet to accommodate a large central island. The kitchen features a U-shaped layout with white cabinets throughout and a navy island as the focal point. The "easy circle" workflow — trash, sink, and dishwasher clustered together — was designed to keep cooking intuitive and efficient. Open Floor Plan: Multiple structural walls were removed across the main floor, including a key wall replaced with a flush beam to create a seamless, open living area. Huge sliding doors were installed to replace a small, light-blocking patio door, flooding the space with natural light and connecting the interior to a new extended deck. Staircase and Entryway: The sidewall of the staircase was opened to create a symmetric, welcoming look from the entry. Black shiplap was added to one side of the staircase as an accent wall — a modern contrast element that pops against the lighter tones without overwhelming the space. Half Bath: A honeycomb tile floor with herringbone installation and complementary wallpaper transformed the powder room into a design-forward space. Flooring and Doors: Matte-finish natural flooring was installed throughout the main and upper floors, with stairs stained to match. All doors were upgraded throughout the home, with black hinges and hardware carrying the dark accent color as a consistent design thread. Master Suite: A private morning makeup area with French doors was created off the master bedroom. A walk-in closet was built out for full functionality. The master bath features picket tile on walls, black floor tile, and wood-tone vanities — a warm, sophisticated finish. Dark green was used as an accent wall in the guest bedroom.
The Transformation Process:
Jim and Marty lived in the basement — set up as a one-bedroom apartment — during the renovation. The Bull Run Kitchen & Bath crew, led by foreman Juan and his team, were not only fast and skilled but also considerate of the couple's presence in the home throughout the process.
"The crew at Bull Run — Juan and the other guys — they really worked hard and worked fast," Jim said. "But they were very courteous that we were still living in the basement and they worked around what we were doing so we could live a relatively peaceful life."
The project had a hard deadline: the couple was getting married, and they wanted the house finished for family guests. Charlie and the team delivered — finishing approximately three days before family arrived from out of town.
