BATHROOM Project — 01
From Dated to Gray: A Bathroom in Haymarket
Bathroom Remodeling

When a large triangular bathtub dominates a bathroom corner, it tends to dominate everything — the layout, the visual weight, the way the room feels. For Dr. Solo in Haymarket, Virginia, that oversized corner tub had been taking up space in her master bathroom for years without earning its keep. Working with designer Salim at Bull Run Kitchen & Bath, she replaced it with a new shower and a tile palette she immediately fell in love with — grays, beiges, and hints of off-white that she describes as beautiful, absolutely beautiful. The finished bathroom remodeling result is one she doesn't want to talk about what came before.

The scope of this Haymarket bathroom remodeling project centered on a single bold decision: removing the large triangular tub in the corner and replacing it with a new shower. That kind of fixture swap involves more than plumbing relocation — it reshapes the flow of the entire room, changes the visual proportions, and creates an opportunity to redesign the space around a completely different anchor element. Dr. Solo worked with designer Salim to develop both the shower design and the broader bathroom aesthetic. The collaboration between client and designer is particularly evident in the material selections, where Dr. Solo's instinct for the tile palette — spotted immediately at the showroom — was the foundation around which the rest of the design was built. Bull Run Kitchen & Bath's local roots were part of why Dr. Solo chose them: "I came to Bull Run Kitchen and Bath because they're local," she said. For a Haymarket homeowner undertaking a meaningful bathroom remodeling project, working with a local company means accessible communication, familiarity with the area's housing styles, and a team invested in its reputation within the community it serves.

Design & Materials:
That gray, beige, and off-white tile palette became the foundation for every other design decision in the space. The countertop was selected in a lighter version of the same color family, maintaining the palette's cohesion while preventing any single element from dominating the room. For the wall paint color, Dr. Solo visited the Sherwin-Williams in Gainesville to select a shade that would work with the tile — landing on a lighter tone specifically chosen to make the tile and vanities "pop" rather than compete. The granite countertop carries the neutral palette further, adding natural variation and depth while staying within the harmonious gray-beige-white range that defines the room's aesthetic. The result is a bathroom where every element feels like it belongs — not a collection of individual choices, but a unified design that reads as complete.

Why Bull Run:

Testimonial:
“As soon as I saw the tile that we looked at, I was like, 'this — I have to use this.' It's got the grays and the beiges and a little bit of kind of off-white and it's beautiful, absolutely beautiful.”
